DISTANCE PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Image
DISTANCE PHYSICAL EDUCATION Hi everyone learning from home right now! Just want you all to know I'll miss seeing you in the gym with your classmates. Nothing is required or "assigned" for you in PE while you're gone but I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE you to be active each day for at least 30 minutes. Some of you already have plans for what you'll be doing but some of you may not. I will therefore be regularly posting some ideas for you to check out if you're looking for some ideas! See you soon, stay healthy!! Ms. Miller      LOWER ELEMENTARY WORKOUT UPPER ELEMENTARY WORKOUT MIDDLE SCHOOL WORKOUT

GREAT START!

GREAT START TO P.E. It was a fantastic beginning of the school year in Phys. Ed. - although a very WARM one! This week ahead looks to be a little cooler (an answer to prayer for the PE teacherπŸ˜…). The kids were great with the new outdoor "set up" for class and I'm still adjusting sometimes as we go to make it work best for everyone.   This week the elementary classes will continue to participate in spacial awareness activities: what and who is in this space? how are others moving in this space? what is the safest way to be moving in this space? Middle school classes will continue working on their soccer skills. Here's to another great week ahead!

LET'S START THE SCHOOL YEAR!

WELCOME TO PYSICAL EDUCATION ZEELAND CHRISTIAN SCHOOL 2020-2021 MS. MILLER Happy beginning of the school year everyone! It feels like I haven't seen you since forever ago! I hope everyone had a great (albeit a different type of) summer! I'm looking forward to this school year for a lot of different reasons, but the biggest reason of all is to get to work with the best students in the world in grades Kindergarten all the way to 8th!!  Some things will be different this year for PE class. Here are a few: PE will be outside and down the hill as long as the weather permits (pray for comfortable weather!). If it's raining, too cold, etc. we will meet in the gym and participate in our classes safely. Since we are outside, please wear shoes that can get a little wet, dirty, etc. Middle school students do not need to change into "PE clothes" at this time so dress accordingly for activity (note the info on shoes mentioned above...) Middle school students bring masks just i...

WELLNESS "BINGO"

WELLNESS BINGO! Hi everyone! The following link is to a "Wellness BINGO" game that I love since it doesn't just address physical health but also mental and social health too! (I sure could use these simple activities lately too!)   Ignore the April date at the top and no need to fill out the questions afterwards (if you don't want to) - just enjoy some great ideas to put into practice!  Hope you are all doing great! Wish I could be spending time with you in the ZCS gym instead of over the internet!! WELLNESS BINGO

SCAVENGER HUNTS!!

SCAVENGER HUNTS I've done a couple of scavenger hunts with my own kids ("What up Mags and Lina!" - they'll love that btw!") Maybe you have already done some too! But if you're looking for additional suggestions - inside and outside the house - check out the links below! Today's weather (Tuesday) was sooooo awesome! I mowed my grass (finally!), pulled some weeds, kicked a soccer ball around a while, and we joined my nieces on their TikTok challenge to walk a marathon - not the whole thing but approximately 2 miles!! I hope good weather comes back soon to stay so we can keep getting outside for physical activities!! GREAT RESOURCE FOR DAILY AT HOME WORKOUTS!

Hi everyone! I had a great meeting (via Zoom of course!) with other local PE teachers yesterday and was introduced to... SWORKIT It's a really cool website that you can get for free that has workouts that you can choose from based on difficulty, age, activity, etc.  Check it out if you're looking for more or new ways to stay active at home while we're away from eachother! As always, I miss you all and hope you're doing well!

FITNESS MONOPOLY

HAPPY MONDAY EVERYONE! Welcome to another week of distance learning in PE class. I wish I could be at school and getting to see all of you - I miss you guys! This PE from home thing is just not my favorite and I'm sure it's not yours either but I pray for you all and hope you are doing well and staying active - yay for the sun being out the last couple of days! πŸ˜†πŸŒ… The link below is to another fun activity of "Fitness Monopoly" to try if you're interested!   Fitness Monopoly

"HOME-STYLE" EQUIPMENT

HOME-STYLE PHYS. ED. EQUIPMENT I remember back in the day for my PE classes at ZCS (8th grade Class of 1989!) that we had a ton of "home made" equipment that we used. Whether my teacher Mr. DeJonge was handy or just frugal, I'm not sure. πŸ˜‰ Either way, these pieces of equipment did the job. In case you're looking for some ideas to use from your own home supplies, here are a few: EASY TARGETS - use for throwing, kicking, tossing, bowling, etc. - cereal boxes - water bottles - used toilet paper cardboard rolls - shoe boxes   EASY SPORT EQUIPMENT - coffee can lid (or similar) as frisbees - balloons (great for striking) - jump ropes - cut out the bottom of plastic milk or laundry bottles as "catchers"   example here   - larger Amazon boxes (I know you now have them!) as hurdles - socks filled with tennis balls (or anything!) for tossing - bed sheet as parachute - hand weights (sand filled anything, large food cans...

ATHLETE MISSING THEIR REGULAR TRAINING?

Hi everyone!    This is a post for mostly MS students - especially those who are missing sport's team training. And it's a shameless shout-out to my former volleyball teammate at Judson University (best middle hitter I ever set for πŸ˜†) Jen (Gentry) Salazar who now lives in California and works for In-Shape Health Clubs.   Some coaches have reached out to you for specific workouts but in case you're interested, the link below will lead you to another one.  (You will need to scroll down a bit to find the post from March 25.) # inshapeattitude Enjoy if you like! Miss you all! Praying we'll see each other yet this spring!πŸ™

BRAIN BREAK "ROOM MOVE"

Image
BRAIN BREAKS "ROOM MOVE!"  So much research has been done in favor of taking "Brain Breaks" (a.k.a. "We've been sitting and trying to focus for too long!! We can't take it anymore!!") when in comes to learning. BENEFITS INCLUDE   INCREASED BLOOD FLOW TO BRAIN & MUSCLES RE-SET IN ATTENTION  RETAINING INFORMATION POSITIVE CHANGE IN ATTITUDE  REDUCED STRESS  INCREASED COGNITIVE CREATIVITY Here is a simple activity to include in your daily schedule while distance learning. It's called "ROOM MOVE!". Here's how it works: Give yourself some space. Get ready to move! Leader will give the first "move" signal... Be ready to change the move after 15-20 seconds!  MOVE SIGNALS: - Move like you're jumping rope - Move like you're in slow motion - Move in an army crawl - Move like a bee is chasing you! - Move like you're hula-hooping - Move in a crab walk - Move like you're in a ...

REQUIRED P.E.???

WHAT IF I'M NOT IN MIDDLE SCHOOL P.E. RIGHT NOW? IS THIS REQUIRED? WHAT IF I ALREADY HAVE A WORK OUT ROUTINE? WE DON'T HAVE YOUTUBE Deep breath my people! If you read the beginning info on my first post (which I'm shocked... I say SHOCKED!!) that you skipped/skimmed over instead of actually reading (I know you all miss my sarcasm😜 ) you'll notice that nothing is required yet. These are suggestions and resources meant to give you a starting place if you're looking for one. Oh, and they're working at unlocking YouTube I hear... so stay tuned. MEANWHILE: It's warming up!! Yay!! Get outside this weekend and send me a pic of something (maybe unique??) that you did while you were there. I'd love to see your smiling faces! (No, this isn't "required" either... 😎) Share here or send me an email sjmiller@zcs.org

DISTANCE LEARNING "P.E. STYLE" INTRO

Image
DISTANCE LEARNING “P.E. STYLE” Hi everyone! This is quite the unexpected way to be "doing" PE to say the least! If you are like me, you might be saying something like "Hey, we can easily find ways to stay active for at least 60 minutes a day!" or "We've already included a physical activity/exercise time into our new daily routine." or "Oh no, is this just one more paper we need to file, email, or keep track of until this is over!?"😊 NEVER FEAR! At this point, there will be no reporting (again, at this point. That could change...) This is a new way of teaching for me just like its a new way of learning for your families. We're in this together and I'm sure we'll be evolving and adjusting together! I'm sure many of you have already been busy with daily activity inside or outdoors - hopefully the temperatures will start to climb so that will be able to continue! While most of us can find ways to stay on top of re...
